Energio Finland Oy and Arctic Smart Village enter into a framework agreement

Arctic Smart Village Oy, which develops sustainable housing, and Energio Finland Oy, which develops and utilizes innovative energy systems, have signed a framework agreement for the design and implementation of energy systems for the first five Smart Villages. The first sites are GeoHouse Smart Village® in Utajärvi and Mynämäki Smart Village®. Other sites will be specified later.

The energy concept innovated during the design of the Utajärvi GeoHouse Smart Village created a strong foundation for continuing cooperation in future projects. The goal is a carbon-neutral energy solution, but preliminary calculations show that more energy is generated than is needed in the Smart Village. Both parties saw that the same solution should be replicated in future projects.

“We take climate and environmental issues very seriously. Clean energy and record-low energy costs are a perfect fit for developing sustainable housing,” says Juri Laurila, CEO of Arctic Smart Village Oy. “Collaboration with energy will take the world one step closer to sustainability when housing emissions are zeroed out,” he continues.

The energy system is based on the sun
“Energy solutions have developed at a dizzying pace in recent years. It is amazing to be involved in this project and through it to implement new and innovative solutions for entire residential communities. I believe that the project will serve as a trend-setter in the ecological housing of the future,” says Energio Finland Oy CEO Vesa Robertsson.

Most of the smart village’s energy comes from the sun. Not only in the form of solar electricity, but also the area’s heating solution is based on the sun. Some of the roofs of the buildings in the area are constructed with a solar collector roof that acts as a water cover, and the heat energy produced by the roof during the summer is stored in a thermal storage tank drilled into the ground, from which the energy is used in the winter. The solution is the work of Heliostorage, a partner of Holda in Kokko. “We store the summer for the winter,” says Robertsson.

The rest of the roofs in the area will be built with solar panels to generate the necessary electricity, and if necessary, a ground-mounted solar park will be built.

The framework agreement also includes export markets. The Smart Village® concept has attracted interest in Europe, Asia and the United States, among other places.
