Mylly Shopping Center has been renovated as a green shopping center. The shopping center already has about 1,200 solar panels on its roof and has received, for example, a LEED Gold environmental certificate. Now Mylly’s greenness will expand to include more than 800 wall-mounted solar panels.
We are pleased to announce that Energio, together with Sweco and Rakennustoimisto Jussit Oy, will deliver what is likely to be Finland’s largest solar panel wall installation.
When mounted on a wall, the yield profile is different
When mounted on a wall, the yield profile of solar panels is different than when mounted on a roof. When mounted on a wall, the total yield of the panel will be lower in the optimal direction compared to when mounted on a roof due to the lower yield in midsummer. However, wall mounting offers other advantages that are particularly interesting in Finnish conditions.
In autumn, winter and spring, the sun shines from a low angle, which optimally hits the wall-mounted panels. As a result, the yield in autumn, winter and spring is higher compared to a roof-mounted plant. Of course, the solar radiation output is really low in winter, but wall mounting still offers a significantly more balanced yield, especially when combined with roof-mounted panels.
When mounted on a wall, the panels are also not covered in snow and ice, making them possible to produce even in winter.
The modeling shows how close the output in March and October, for example, is to the output in mid-summer in a wall-mounted power plant.
Work begins in January
Installations at the Mylly shopping center will begin in January 2024. The power plant will be installed in three different parts of the shopping center. We will update the progress of the work in the form of posts throughout the winter.
