But how significant an impact does an individual system actually have on the carbon footprint? <\/p>\n<p>In this article, we will look at the numbers to see what happens from an emissions perspective when a typical single-family homeowner purchases a 14-panel (450 W\/panel) solar power system.<\/p>\n<h2>How many emissions are generated by solar panels themselves?<\/h2>\n<p>Manufacturing, transporting and installing solar panels consumes energy \u2013 it doesn\u2019t go anywhere. The average carbon footprint for panels is around <strong>20\u201340 g CO\u2082e per kWh produced<\/strong> , depending on the country and manufacturing method. Let\u2019s carefully choose an average value for the calculation: 30 g CO\u2082e\/kWh.  <\/p>\n<p>The example system (14 \u00d7 450 W = 6.3 kWp) produces an average of approximately <strong>5,400 kWh per year<\/strong> in Finland. Over 15 years, this means a total of approximately <strong>81,000 kWh<\/strong> . <\/p>\n<p><strong>Emissions from manufacturing:<\/strong><br \/> 30 g \u00d7 81,000 kWh = <strong>2,430,000 g = 2.43 tons CO\u2082e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the \u201cinitial emission\u201d of the system \u2013 what must first be compensated for by saved electricity production.<\/p>\n<h2>How much do solar panels save emissions in Finland?<\/h2>\n<p>The average emission factor of electricity in Finland is currently around <strong>100 g CO\u2082e\/kWh<\/strong> . When panels produce electricity directly from the sun, they displace electricity purchased from the grid, the production of which involves emissions. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Emissions saved per year:<\/strong><br \/> 5400 kWh \u00d7 100 g = <strong>540,000 g = 0.54 tonnes CO\u2082e\/year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Total savings over 15 years:<\/strong><br \/> 0.54 tonnes \u00d7 15 years = <strong>8.1 tonnes CO\u2082e<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Zero carbon footprint: how fast will it happen?<\/h2>\n<p>Now we can compare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>The system initially generates approximately <strong>2.43 tonnes of CO\u2082e<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>It saves <strong>0.54 tons of CO\u2082e<\/strong> annually<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2.43 h \/ 0.54 h = ~4.5 years<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words: a solar panel system is <strong>climate positive after about 4.5 years<\/strong> , and after that all electricity produced is simply emission reduction.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/energio.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1_98.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><em>A solar panel system of 14 installed on a brick patterned metal roof. For example, a 15-year emission saving <strong>of 8.1 tons<\/strong> from one system corresponds to: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>54,000 km of driving in a combustion engine passenger car<\/strong> \u2013 approximately <strong>4 years of average Finnish driving<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\u2708\ufe0f <strong>16 round-trip flights to Berlin<\/strong> , or <strong>3 flights to Thailand<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>270 kg less beef<\/strong> \u2013 that is, a plant-based diet for several years<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>Emissions from manufacturing 27 laptops<\/strong> , or <strong>100 smartphones<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>Ten-year carbon sequestration of 100 growing trees<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thus, one system alone will not change the world, but its impact is real \u2013 and tangible.<\/p>\n<h2>What if all single-family homes in Finland did the same?<\/h2>\n<p>There are approximately <strong>1.1 million single-family homes<\/strong> in Finland. It is assumed that each of them would be equipped with a corresponding solar panel system. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Total annual production:<\/strong><br \/> 1.1 million \u00d7 5400 kWh = <strong>5.94 TWh<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For comparison, the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant produces approximately 12-15 TWh of electricity per year.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Emissions saved per year:<\/strong><br \/> 5.94 TWh \u00d7 100 g = <strong>594,000 tonnes CO\u2082e\/year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Over the course of 15 years:<\/strong><br \/> <strong>~8.9 million tons of CO\u2082e<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What does this correspond to?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>1.5 years of passenger car traffic emissions in Finland<\/strong> (estimated ~6 Mt CO\u2082e\/year)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>1.85 million trips around the world by car<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\u2708\ufe0f <strong>3.5 million round-trip flights to Thailand<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>10\u201315 million tons of cement production<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>  <strong>Annual carbon sequestration of 890,000 hectares of forest<\/strong> \u2013 almost the entire area of \u200b\u200bUusimaa<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Summary: Climate impact multiplies when individuals become a group<\/h2>\n<p>Although solar panels generate emissions, they pay back this climate debt in just <strong>4\u20135 years<\/strong> . After that, they are purely climate-friendly. A single system saves over <strong>8 tonnes of CO\u2082e<\/strong> in 15 years, and a nationwide change would mean annual savings of millions of tonnes.
